Retinol Alternatives That Actually Work | Dermatologist Explains

Retinols are some of the most effective skincare ingredients for improving uneven skin tone, texture, wrinkles, collagen loss, and signs of photoaging. However, not everyone can tolerate retinol or retinaldehyde. Sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, pregnancy, and irritation are common reasons people look for alternatives.

In this video, board-certified dermatologist Dr Dray breaks down science-based alternatives to cosmetic retinol products. This discussion focuses on cosmetic ingredients, not prescription or over-the-counter retinoid medications like tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, or trifarotene. Nothing in this video is meant to replace treatments prescribed by your doctor for skin disease.

Key Takeaway

Retinols remain the most studied cosmetic ingredients for anti-aging, but they are not for everyone. When retinol is not tolerated, ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids, azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and red light therapy can still provide meaningful skin benefits when used consistently and appropriately. Sun protection and barrier health remain essential no matter what ingredients you use.

Retinols are some of the most effective cosmetic ingredients for improving uneven skin tone, texture, wrinkles, and signs of photoaging, but they are not tolerated by everyone. In this video, I discuss science-based alternatives to cosmetic retinol products, including alpha hydroxy acids, azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and red and near-infrared light therapy.

This video refers to cosmetic retinol and retinaldehyde, not prescription or over-the-counter retinoid medications. Nothing discussed here is meant to replace treatments prescribed by your doctor for skin disease.

Have you tried any of these retinol alternatives, and if so, which worked best for your skin? Let me know in the comments, and feel free to share what you would like me to cover in future videos.

  2. thank you! ❤ I have started my tretinoin journey a couple of months ago and am almost on an alternate day basis, good to know about all the other positive effects!

I was wondering if I should pair down with the application during summer, even if I wear sunscreen and reapply it and I try to remember my hat as much as possible. Still the sun is strong and not sure if it’s all too much?

  3. These alternatives are for people who have clear skin in general but want to protect it for the long run

  4. Question: Can I use the Neutrogena vitamin C over my G&G A20 or Naturium retinal product at night? I use Remedy Vitamin C in the morning. I have a Currentbody red light mask that I have used for over a year first on my face and then after I was diagnosed with Hashimotos, I started using it on my neck to reduce my antibodies for my thyroid. My doctor was really impressed how much they reduced. My question is about how often to use the red light mask? I have been using it daily or every other day.

The Cetaphil new face cream is excellent, and I just got my second tube of it. The Alpha product I have used for almost a full bottle, but I did get Cetaphil’s body cream too.

  5. I have extremely sensitive skin. Im sixty five-years of age. My face as dropped badly. No idea where to go.
